Live Only According to His Will, the Will of God

Matthew 26:39

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Ask for God to Fulfill His Will

Not everything a person desires is fulfilled simply because they believe in and love God. What is fulfilled is God’s Will. Many people assume that if they believe in God and love Him, their own wishes will automatically come true. However, when people truly believe in and serve God, it is God’s Will that is fulfilled. Within God’s Will, there are things God desires from us, and there are also things we personally desire. You must understand this clearly.

If you love and believe in God, you must earnestly pray for God’s Will to be fulfilled. Only when God’s Will is fulfilled does Heaven come to Earth. Just because your own desire is fulfilled does not mean God’s Will has been fulfilled. When God’s Will is fulfilled, it is fulfillment at God’s level. When only your own will is fulfilled, it is limited to your own level. That is why Jesus prayed, as recorded in Matthew 26:39, that God’s Will be done rather than His own. In the same way, we must pray for God’s Will to be done. Only then will God also fulfill our individual wills within His Will.

God Makes His Will Known Through the One He Has Sent

God does nothing without revealing His work to His prophets, servants, or the one He has sent, as written in Amos 3:7. God does not hide His Will from those He loves. Instead, He invites them to dwell in Him, guides them, and reveals His Will so they may understand and act.

You must believe in God, love Him, and follow Him. Only then can you hear and recognize His voice when He speaks. Those who fail to do this may hear many words but still fail to understand, living instead by their own thoughts. God carries out His Will every day, but only those who seek to know it recognize it. Those who do not make the effort remain unaware. If you try to fit the Almighty God into your own limited thinking, you will fail to discern His Will. It is like trying to pour a large vessel into a small one. Instead, you must place your heart into God’s thoughts.

The fire within each person is like ordinary fire used in daily life, but the fire of God is like the sun. You must live with an awareness of the vast difference between your thoughts and God’s thoughts. Only then will you understand God’s works. Even when you become one with God, your understanding will match the capacity of your heart. At times, God allows you to realize your limitations by revealing the depth of that capacity.

Earnestly Ask God to Help You Act According to His Will

To know God’s Will, you must earnestly ask God to help you live according to His Will. When you ask sincerely, God examines whether you are living in alignment with His Will and helps you realize the portion of His Will that applies to you personally. In this way, you can also come to know the Will of the Holy Spirit.

You Will Know God’s Will by Observing His Actions

We understand water by watching how it flows, and fire by observing how it burns. In the same way, we understand the sun, the moon, the Earth, and all creation by observing their movements and actions. We understand people by watching what they do. Likewise, we come to understand the Will of God, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Son through Their actions.

When observing God’s actions, you must completely set aside personal preferences and emotions. To understand God’s Will and heart, you must entrust everything to Him and observe His actions while praying with an empty heart. Look carefully at individuals, families, nations, the world, and this present age. You will see that God is acting and repaying according to deeds. You must observe attentively and persistently until the end.

You Must Understand Reason

God speaks according to a person’s mission. Blessed people do not fight, yet King David and Joshua fulfilled God’s Will through battle. God was with them when they fought. Jesus, however, was a Savior who was not meant to fight. Therefore, God gives His Word according to each person’s mission. Each person must act according to the reason that fits their time and circumstances.

A person who understands and acts according to reason is wise. Reason is the discernment of principles and situations. Something is said in one way because it applies to that situation, even if it appears similar to another. Words may sound the same, but their meaning differs depending on who speaks them and in what context. You must understand reason.

An example appears in Matthew 19:21–24. Jesus told a wealthy man to sell his possessions and follow Him. When the man heard this, he went away sorrowful because he had great wealth. Jesus then said it is difficult for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

This statement was not meant to condemn all wealthy people. It applied specifically to those whose hearts were bound by wealth. If it meant all rich people could not enter Heaven, then countless believers who have served God faithfully while being wealthy would be excluded. That is not the case.

At that time, wealth meant having more than enough food, not modern abundance. The issue was the center of the man’s heart. He was unwilling to part with what controlled him. Jesus was not commanding everyone to discard all possessions, but addressing the condition of the heart. When interpreting Scripture, you must interpret it according to God’s Will and the context of the time. God gives guidance according to each person’s situation and mission. A person who understands this and applies it wisely is truly wise.

Live Abundantly Filled With Grace According to God’s Will

To live abundantly filled with grace according to God’s Will, there are several practices.

1. You must pray during designated prayer times.

2. When you evangelize, you are filled with grace, truth, and the Holy Spirit. Especially when you testify about God and His Word, the Holy Spirit fills you abundantly.

3. When you recognize God’s grace, give thanks, and acknowledge the work of the Holy Spirit and the Lord, you are filled with grace. When you remember the signs God has shown you, the Holy Spirit works within you, filling you with gratitude and truth. When you realize how God, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus have healed you, helped you, and worked in your life, you are filled even more abundantly with grace.

4. Do not forget what God has done for you. Reflect on it and discern the Will behind it. When you do this, your faith ignites, and you can use what God has done for you in a meaningful way.

5. To fulfill God’s Will, you must develop yourself into God’s greatest masterpiece. Whatever you do, practice diligently and act with your whole life. In doing so, you approach the ideal. This is the process of becoming an eternal work of spiritual love. Just as people are amazed by a great work of art in the physical world, you must cultivate yourself into a work of faith that you present to God. When you do so, God will say, “You are pleasing to My heart,” and signs will occur continually.
