Proverbs 4:4-9
Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”
Proverbs 9:9-10
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Wisdom of the past
Solomon was anointed as the king of Israel at an early age. As a young king, he realized his inadequacies and asked God for wisdom to skillfully govern God’s nation as his father King David had done. After Solomon prayed and offered a thousand burnt offerings, God appeared to him in a dream. God told him that he was asking for the right thing, and gave him wisdom in return. King Solomon received God’s wisdom and with it wrote 3,000 proverbs, constructed God’s temple, and ruled competently over the people of Israel for 40 years.
Solomon lived his own life wisely and also taught and ruled over his people with wisdom. In addition, he wrote a lot about wisdom and knowledge in the books of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs in the Bible. In Proverbs 4:4-9, it says, “Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them.” Wisdom is supreme; therefore Solomon talked about gaining wisdom and understanding in life, even if it costs all that you have to achieve it.
Wisdom for the present
In modern times, wisdom can be shown in many ways. It is the ability to judge and discern. It is to change the method of doing things when they don’t work out. When doing something, you shouldn’t just focus on one thing—your main purpose—but you should act after considering whether it may cause other problems. That is wisdom. If you’re too focused on one thing, problems could result, and you could get hurt or even die. Knowing properly about things allows you to act wisely, but if you don’t know, then seeing and mimicking the actions of those who do know is also wisdom.
With sin, you cannot go to Heaven; therefore, repenting of your sins and making yourself clean is wisdom. In order to gain a lot, it is wise to give thanks to the Trinity often, rejoice, pray, and converse with Them. The one who loves the Trinity and the Lord absolutely is the wisest person. So confess to the Lord and believe in him absolutely while valuing the Word, cherishing it, and acting on it. When taking action, make efforts, study, and act after asking the Trinity and the Lord. Living while knowing the purpose that God, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord have for you is ultimate wisdom.
Realizing your own ignorance and taking the Lord’s words to be greater than your own thoughts is wisdom. You should center on and act according to the thoughts of God, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord. Wise people draw close to the Word and close to the Trinity and the Lord, doing things according to the design of God and the Holy Spirit. In this way, your actions become a magnificent, beautiful, and mysterious work of art.
Preparing for and preventing trouble beforehand is wisdom
Taking action after checking thoroughly is wisdom. For example, you should always be alert and never forget about swindlers, either in person or on the phone. Check, discern, and cut them off. That is wisdom. It’s unwise to believe people who act simply based on what they’ve heard or according to their own thoughts and perspectives. The one who acts without asking and asks only after he has incurred a loss is a foolish person.
The same goes for making purchases. Those who get caught up in the atmosphere or the sales pitch are without wisdom. When you buy something, first check in detail. Those who see and check with their eyes are wise, such as people who buy birds from the market only after having seen them sing. If you buy birds happily just because the vendor offers you a big discount, you will regret buying them later, realizing, “Ah, this is why the vendor gave me those birds at a cheap price” because the birds won’t sing. The same applies to everything in life.
Live with wisdom
People who are careful on their own have received wisdom. Paying attention to your health, treating it as life, and taking care of yourself before you get sick is wisdom. Wisdom protects your life, allows you to age slower and live longer, becomes your crown of glory, and keeps you safe.
Those who act diligently and at the appropriate time are wise. Whether in doing their own work or the work of God, a wise person improves every day as they take action. However, the Holy Spirit sometimes changes the situation, thwarts your intentions, and even shatters your hopes in order to make you become more successful. Those who realize this, give thanks, and take action accordingly are the wisest people.
There is something that one who has gained wisdom must also gain. That is understanding. The essence of understanding is to know the Omnipotent and Omniscient God properly.
