1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Matthew 6:19-22
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
As a counterpart of love and joy to the Trinity, the work of giving thanks is done by living every day giving your heart, body, soul, and spirit to God.
Give thanks with love in all circumstances
Whenever you have an occasion to give thanks to God, wanting to repay Him through monetary offerings is a basic and common response. Even in the world, people often give money and gifts when they are thankful to their loved ones, their friends, or their neighbors. However, you cannot fully thank someone with just money or material wealth alone. What’s greater than that is giving thanks by treating well the one to whom you’re thankful in your everyday life with all your thoughts and heart. Giving thanks by simply handing over an envelope with money and leaving it at that is treating it like a business.
Giving thanks to God is different from thanking other people when you receive help from them. God created the heavens, the earth, and all creation, and He created human beings and allowed them to live on the earth. Therefore, even if things don’t work out the way you want because you fail to do your full responsibility, you should always give thanks to God.
Apostle Paul wasn’t always in a position to live in gratitude because he was often locked up in prison and was constantly faced with tribulation and persecution. Still, he said, “Always give thanks in your life. Whether things work out well or not, always give thanks to the Almighty God who has helped you and loved you throughout your entire life.”
God saves you from death more often than you know
There is not a single person whom God, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord has not saved from death sometime in the past. If the Trinity had not saved you, your body would have died by now, and your spirit may have even gone to the eternal domain of death. Therefore, since your body and spirit have lived on, you should live your life giving thanks, rejoicing, and loving the Trinity. God, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord have saved you from death ten, twenty, thirty, fifty, seventy, or even a hundred times. But people don’t know about these times clearly. For example, if there were going to be a car accident that would have killed you, but somehow the accident didn’t happen or you avoided it, you would never know that God had saved you from death.
Only when people are on the verge of dying but somehow barely survive do they realize that they had a close brush with death. However, if God helps them go on a peaceful path from the very beginning and avoid the path of death entirely, they may not know that God had helped them at all. Unless you’re on the brink of death, you don’t realize when God saves you. Therefore, everyone lives without really knowing how many times God has saved them.
Let’s say someone gave you a gift worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But if you were on the verge of dying and they couldn’t save you, you would die without being able to use it. Therefore, it would be useless even if you had received the gift. That’s why God, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Son give you material blessings on top of saving your life.
God helps those who are thankful
If you’re unthankful and ignore God who saved your body, soul, and spirit, then you can’t feel His heart and will easily forget about Him. As a result, the spiritual connection between you and God gets severed. So then, even if you’re on the brink of death, God cannot save you because your heart isn’t connected to His. But if you’re constantly thankful that God has saved you, you’ll form a deep spiritual connection with God’s heart. Then when your life is in danger, God will feel your heart and know and can readily help you and be with you since you are in tune with Him. Therefore, always give thanks to God, the Holy Spirit, and the Lord.
Bear the fruit of thanksgiving
If you only receive things and use them without giving thanks, you will become greedy, and complaints will ensue. But if you give thanks, joy will come. A life of thanksgiving is like living in love with your beloved counterpart, so you can’t stop giving thanks. And if you live giving thanks, rejoicing, and being happy, all your problems will be resolved.
Just as a farmer sows seeds, sow thanksgiving and love. Sow prayer, praise, joy, glory, and goodness. Then when the time comes, you will bear fruit hundreds or thousands of times more than you have sown. God continually blesses and gives to those who are thankful and love Him.
Give thanks for everything that God has done for you until now. Only you know what He has done for you.
